Getting My Site Online

1.  Decide what your site should do
2.  Select most cost effective services
3.  Pick a domain name
4.  Work with your designer to build site

Taking your business online can be a daunting task, especially for those who feel that they are not knowledgeable when it comes to computing.  No worries.  This quick primer will explain how to do it, and some of the terms you will come across along the way.

Prior to beginning your site you should have a basic idea of what you want your site to do, and maybe even how you would like it to look.  Based on this information we can help you choose the package and pricing that accomplishes your goal in the most cost effective manner possible.

The first decision you will have to make is what your domain name will be.  A domain name is simply your web address such as www.amazon.com or www.yahoo.com.  You should choose one that your site visitors will remember, that is easy to spell, and describes who you are and what you do.  Keep in mind that many names are already taken, so you may have to be a bit creative.  For example if your name is Anne and you sell jewelry you may find that www.annesjewelry.com is already taken.  You could also try www.jewelrybyanne.com or something similar.  You can also try an address that ends in .net, .us, or .biz.

After selecting your domain name you will need to find a server, or web hosting company.  A web host provides the computers (or servers) where the actual files that make up your website.  When someone enters your domain name their request is sent to that the server.  The server then sends the webpage back to the person that requested it.

While you can purchase these two products separately and then ask a web designer to build your site, it is often more cost effective (not to mention easier) to buy the domain, web server, and design services as a package deal.  OMD Solutions offers packages for personal websites, as well as business website.
